The Black Ceiling: How Race Still Matters in the Elite Workplace

Kevin Woodson

In the Black Ceiling, sociologist and law professor Kevin Woodson draws from interviews of more than one hundred Black professionals to identify a hidden disadvantage that undermines the careers of many Black workers at America’s elite law firms, investment banks, and management consulting firms. Racial discomfort, or the unease many Black employees feel in workplaces that are steeped in Whiteness, can hinder Black professionals' careers even in the absence of racial discrimination. This book explains why racial discomfort occurs, how it harms careers, and what employers and other people committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion can do about it.
