The Contemporary Spanish American Novel: Bolaño and After

Will H. Corral

The Contemporary Spanish American Novel..., edited by Will Corral, Juan De Castro, and Nicholas Birns (a graduate of the College), is an authoritative guide to an important world literature. While many of the sixty nine authors covered -Aira, Bolaño, Castellanos Moya, Vásquez, Zambra- are gaining an increasing readership in English and are frequently taught and reviewed in The New York Times, TLS, The Wall Street Journal, there is sparse criticism in English or Spanish. This extensive collection introduces a rich and varied novelistic tradition, studying underestimated or unfamiliar novels and novelists, including new U.S. Latino authors; and exploring exile, migration, gender representation, metafiction, new politics, and ethnic diversity through rigorous essays authored mainly by international critics.
