Creatio ex Nihilo: Poems and Stories about Depression, Survival, and the Resurgence of Hope

Jessica Nance

"Creatio ex Nihilo," Latin for "creation out of nothing," is an endeavor born out of trauma and severe, treatment-resistant depression. After falling victim to a sexual assault at nineteen years old, and surviving a suicide attempt at twenty, the author’s journey of life after “death”—of suicide's close call and of profound emotional loss—begins. The journey of creating something, out of nothing, begins. The poems and creative nonfiction stories in "Creatio ex Nihilo" navigate the labyrinths of despair, turmoil, and grief, but also the prisms of resilience, humanity, and ultimately, hope.
