The Dead Don't Bitch

Russell Bittner

What's in a rose? "A rose by any other name would smell as sweet" (Shakespeare). This may be no rose at all. Many of these pieces smell anything but sweet. But—and for what it's worth—this is what a so-called "emerging writer" goes through both to work out his craft and to find his voice.

Many of these stories might strike you, generous reader, as self-indulgent. If so, my apologies. What I've always tried to keep in mind as I wrote was Aristotle's dictum—which is, roughly: "A story must have a beginning, a middle and an end." Pure and simple. That, and it must keep the reader's attention. If I've failed to capture and keep your attention, the fault is entirely mine—and I offer my apologies.
