Diary of a Russianist, volume II: Russia in the Roaring 1990s

Gilbert Doctorow

Volume II of the Memoirs cover the relatively brief period of time 1993 to 2002. However, economic and political change occurred in Russia with blinding speed over these years as the energy of a social mainspring wound interminably over 70 years of Communism was released at one go. The country was redefining its national character, its place in the world. And both the United States and Europe were reconsidering how to deal with Russia, in a reevaluation that foreshadowed the confrontation we see today.
Then at the height of his professional career, meeting with his peers from the 50,000-family strong expatriate community and with the cultural and intellectual leaders of Russian society, the author captured the instability, the dynamism of the age in diary entries presented here. The whole is drawn together by an overarching narrative and punctuated by news clippings that to present eyes are stunning in their diversity of opinion.
