Embroidering Dreams - 50 Years of Empowering Women and Preserving the Craft of Needlework

Sonya Rehman

In 1967 a few women decided to set up a stitching unit in a small garage in the city of Rawalpindi, Pakistan. What began as a small effort to help the widows of the India-Pakistan war of 1965, snowballed into a groundbreaking nonprofit. This is the story of Behbud, Pakistan’s largest self-sustainable social enterprise.

For 50 years, Behbud has trained women in the traditional crafts of Pakistan. This large-format book uses beautiful photographs and first person narratives to show how women have not only kept our traditions alive, but also emancipated themselves and their communities from the shackles of poverty. These are the stories of heroic women - home-based workers, community leaders, artisans, teachers, doctors and volunteers - who make up Behbud. Featuring lush photographs that showcase the process of fashion and textile design, the book explores the craftsmanship and impact of embroidery.

Embroidering Dreams truly shows how the smallest of efforts can be the biggest game-changers for progress in a country like Pakistan.
