Frame 39

Frederick Shands

Frame 39 explores belief and knowledge, believing and knowing, spiritual spaces and the creative process through two interlocked narratives: John, a Swedish architect commissioned to design a facility for world ecumensim in Malta, and Jennifer, an American documentary fillmaker embarking on writing an original screenplay. What links their narratives are 39 black and white photos, taken by John as he travels to Malta and then out to buildings significant for world religions from Spain to Japan, and found some years later by Jennifer. Jennifer attempts to follow the photographs, and thus follows a storyline paralleling John's spatially, but developing quite differently psychologically.
