Inside the Upheaval of Journalism

Dotty Brown (and Ted Gest)

Marking their 50th reunion last year, members of the Journalism School Class of '69 collaborated on a book, "Inside the Upheaval of Journalism, Reporters Look Back on 50 Years of Covering the News," which was published this year by Peter Lang. Thirteen class members wrote chapters, with the help of many other class members and outside experts, covering such timely topics as politics, health, criminal justice, technology, international affairs and diversity. The book was edited by class members Ted Gest and Dotty Brown. It draws extensively on their experiences at Columbia, starting in the days when a few major news organizations dominated national coverage. It describes the dramatic changes in the field caused by the rapid growth of the internet and the economic decline of print publications. The book was published on the eve of the coronavirus pandemic, which promises even more major changes in journalism.
