Biography of expatriate American sculptor who was recognized as a major artist in the post-war generation. An expert in ancient metallurgy, Metcalf studied at the London Central School of Arts and Crafts, explored major metal sites in the Mediterranean world from Deia, Majorca where he collaborated with Robert Graves. In 1956, he moved to Paris, where he made his reputation. he enjoted friendships with Brancusi, Giacometti, Marcel Duchamp, Man Ray, Magritte as well as the nouveaux realistes. In 1966 he discovered the town of Santa Clara del Cobre in Michoacan, Mexico where a pre-Columbian copper technique survived. His collaboration with the copper smiths and the Mexican sculptor Ana Pellicer became the major work of his life. He taught the smiths European metal techniques, introduced machine tools and (with Pellicer) directed the greatest craft school in Mexico. He died in 2012 at age 87.
