The Jury Has a Verdict!

Thad Long

This book is a prequel within a trilogy of the "Ted Born Courtroom Drama/Thriller” series, following the 2020 release of “The Impossible Mock Orange Trial” and the 2021 release of “The Vow: Ted Born’s Last Trial.” – both of which received very gratifying reviews. “The Jury Has a Verdict!” gets its name from the moment when lawyers and clients are anxiously awaiting a jury’s deliberations, and the court bailiff comes to them and says, “The jury has a verdict., please return to the courtroom..” It is about an ethical lawyer, Ted Born, who has some trying interactions with several judges, including one who was furious at Ted. While a lawyer has strong obligations to the Court and its Judges, he or she also has strong fiduciary duties to represent clients’ causes as effectively as possible within the limits of propriety, there may be times in the career of a lawyer when he or she believes a certain trial Judge is in error, to the client’s detriment, and reluctantly sees no alternative but to take measures in the client’s interest that, despite taken respectfully and politely, nevertheless irritate the Judge and engender resentment. Ted Born finds himself caught in a quandary where there seem to be no good options whereby the duties to the Court and to the Client can both be perfectly accommodated.

This work displays the exhilaration of Ted Born at moments of triumph, as well as his agony when he finds himself on the wrong side of a Federal Judge. The ultimate motif is how fragile the pursuit of justice can be in the context of a legal system that is the best in the world but presents real life challenges as well.
