In the early nineteenth century, visitors to the United States noted how often Americans sued each other to resolve their problems and disputes. This presentation by Professor Hannah Farber will take you on a tour of typical lawsuits in early American courtrooms, ranging from Delaware’s High Court of Chancery to the living room of a small-town justice of the peace. You will be invited to consider: what were Americans doing in court all the time? Did they get what they wanted? And how can this bygone world help us better understand American law and politics today?
