Dr. Chris Stacey split this presentation into three evenings to do justice to the subject:

January 15 - P1: Federal Indian Legislation from the 1851 Creation of the Federal Reservation System to the 1963 Termination and Relocation Acts. Discussion on the Bureau of Indian Affairs Relocation Program. Presentation on Native American Migration to Urban Areas and Native American Migration to Chicago.

February 19 - P2: Native American Life in Chicago During the 1950s. The American Indian Center; St. Augustine’s Center for American Indians, the Uptown neighborhood and the workplace. We will review a packet of newspaper articles from the 1950s and look at some primary sources from the Robert Reitz papers. Registration starts on 11/29/24.

March 6 - P3: Native American Life in Chicago During the 1960s. Bureau of Indian Affairs 1968 “Chicago Story” promotional film. Chicago’s Native American Committee, the O-Wai-Ya-Wa elementary school and the emergence of Intertribal activism. Packet of newspaper articles from the 1960s and look at some primary sources from the Robert Reitz papers. Registration starts on 11/29/24.
