About Paul Dykstra, Pianist and Lecturer
Paul Dykstra supported choral and keyboard activities at Temple Sholom of Chicago for more than 25 years. He is currently the music director of Temple Jeremiah at Northfield. As a collaborative pianist, he has dedicated his career to chamber music and to exposing the world to the music lost in the Nazi Holocaust of World War II. He has performed as a special guest of the Singer Festival in Warsaw, Poland, debuting the chamber music (piano trio) of Mieczyslaw Weinberg and other great Jewish composers. As the Musical Director and Conductor of the Chicago-based Lira Singers and Founding Conductor of the Lira Symphony Orchestra, Dykstra spent more than 15 years bringing the opera and classical music of Poland to audiences throughout the United States. He conducted recordings and led performances with Lira at Chicago’s famed Symphony Center.
About Susan Lewis Friedman, Soprano
Susan Lewis Friedman’s voice is known for its clear tone, and concise communication of text. Her singing has been described as “angelic, prayerful, and soulful”. In addition to being a Cantor, Susie sings in operas, musical theater, and on the concert stage with orchestra, chamber ensembles. She has appeared as the soprano soloist with the Santa Fe Symphony, Tempe Symphony, and Bach Works. Susie has been commissioned to write original compositions for sacred occasions in synagogue communities. Many of her original songs are staples of Jewish worship in Chicagoland. She is a proud member of the Cantor’s Assembly, the American Conference of Cantors, and Actors Equity Association.
