CAA: A Year in Review

December 15, 2019

What a year we've had! Read on for just a sampling of the achievements by our alumni community in 2019.

  • At our dozens of CU there! events worldwide, there were 1,032 student attendees, who got to establish connections in their future alumni network.

  • A new, AI-powered, enhanced version of the Online Alumni Community launched—the only verified space to search for and connect with almost 350,000 alumni.

  • Some of our incredible alumnae broke barriers in the arts and law: Denise Murrell '04, '10, '14GSAS, curator of the groundbreaking Posing Modernity exhibit at the Wallach Art Gallery, was named associate curator for 19th and 20th-century art at the Met, and Ashley James '09CC was named the Guggenheim Museum's first full-time black curator in its 60-year history. Sheila Boston '93LAW was the first woman of color nominated as president of the New York City Bar Association, and Deborah Chow '03SOA is Star Wars' first woman director in 42 years. Way to go!

  • Our alumni are also paving the way in journalism, healthcare, entrepreneurship—and others took notice: Four alumni were among the five Columbians who won a Pulitzer Prize this year, ten alumni landed a place on the coveted Forbes "30 Under 30" list, and four alumni secured spots on Crains' 2019 "40 Under 40" list.

  • The CAA's reach continued to expand in new, exciting ways. We launched WeChat, Weibo, and Spotify accounts.

  • A record 3,000 of you raised your hand this fall to become a member of this year's Alumni Voices panel.

  • More than 1,200 alumni signed up for the brand-new virtual Columbia Alumni Book Club, which provides a unique avenue for community and discussion across the worldwide alumni network.

  • We welcomed over 10,000 new graduates as Columbia alumni this year. Congratulations and welcome!
